🍂 Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Pamper Your Dog’s Coat
(And How Dog and Bone Grooming in Carmarthenshire Can Help)
As the leaves start to fall and the rain becomes a daily feature here in Carmarthenshire, many dog owners begin to notice their pets’ coats getting thicker, muddier and sometimes a little more tangled than usual. Autumn is a beautiful season — but for your dog’s skin and coat, it can be a tricky one.
As a professional Dog Groomer at Dog and Bone Grooming, a peaceful one-to-one dog grooming salon in rural Carmarthenshire, and at this time of year I often get asked:
-
“Why is my dog shedding more?”
-
“Do they really need grooming in autumn?”
-
“How can I stop all the mud and matting?”
Let’s take a closer look…
🍁 Why Autumn Grooming Matters More Than You Think
As temperatures drop, your dog’s coat naturally begins to transform. Many breeds start to grow in their winter undercoat — a soft, dense layer designed to keep them warm. While it’s great for insulation, it also means:
✅ More shedding
✅ More knots, especially behind ears, armpits and tail
✅ More moisture getting trapped in fur → perfect breeding ground for bacteria and skin irritation
✅ More mud = more baths (be aware using the right products is essential)
💡 Autumn Tip: The “5-Minute Towel & Comb Rule”
Here’s a simple tip you can try at home to make your dog’s autumn coat easier to manage:
After a walk, especially in wet or muddy weather:
-
Towel dry the legs, tummy and behind the ears — these are the first areas to tangle. Its important to remember not to scrub at the coat, but to dry in the direction of hair growth to avoid knotting and tangles.
-
Use a wide-tooth comb or slicker brush for just 5 minutes.
-
Focus on friction zones: armpits, collar line, behind ears, tail base. These are the areas where hair will rub together on a walk and cause knotting
Doing this a few times a week can prevent mats forming — saving your dog discomfort and helping avoid shaving severely knotted areas.
