Dog Groomers Frequently Asked Questions

1. How often should my dog be groomed?

At Dog & Bone Grooming, I recommend most dogs are groomed every 6 weeks, depending on breed, coat type, and lifestyle. Long or double-coated dogs, or those that spend lots of time outdoors, often need more frequent visits. I tailor a grooming schedule for each dog to maintain coat health and comfort..

2. How much does grooming cost?

The cost of grooming at Dog & Bone Grooming depends on several factors, including breed, size, coat condition (clean or matted), temperament, and the level of grooming required (wash & tidy, full groom, or specific styles). I provide transparent pricing with an estimate before the groom. Every dog is an individual, so pricing may vary even between dogs of the same breed.

3. What does a typical dog grooming service include?

A full grooming service includes a gentle wash using high‑quality products, hand or blow drying, brushing and de‑matting where appropriate, trimming or clipping to breed or owner preference, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and finishing touches. For dogs with special needs, I adapt the service to ensure it remains calm and stress‑free.

4. When should a puppy have their first groom?

Puppies are welcome at Dog & Bone Grooming once they have completed their vaccinations and are comfortable exploring new environments. Early grooming sessions focus on gentle introductions to grooming sounds, smells, and handling, helping puppies build confidence and making future appointments far less stressful.

5. What do I need to bring to my dog’s first grooming appointment?

For your first visit, please bring any relevant health or behavioural information (such as skin sensitivities or previous grooming experiences), your dog’s usual collar and lead, and optionally a favourite toy or treat. I work one‑to‑one, so understanding your dog’s background helps me create a relaxed and positive experience. First appointments may take a little longer to allow your dog time to settle in.

6. Do you groom mixed or unusual‑breed dogs?

Yes. I work with both pedigree and mixed‑breed dogs. Each dog is assessed individually based on coat type and condition, and grooming is tailored accordingly. No breed is “too tricky” when given the right care, patience, and time.

7. What if my dog is anxious or fearful of grooming?

I specialise in one‑to‑one grooming in a calm rural salon, which greatly reduces stress. Anxious dogs are given time to acclimatise, with gentle handling, natural products, and breaks when needed. My priority is a positive experience — not a rushed groom.

8. Can I see photos of your previous work or before & after results?

Absolutely. I regularly share before and after photos on the Dog & Bone Grooming Facebook and Instagram pages, showcasing my work and different styling options. I’m also happy to discuss styles that would best suit your dog.

9. How long will the grooming appointment take?

Appointment times vary depending on the service and your dog’s coat condition. A wash and tidy may take 1–2 hours, while a full groom on a long‑haired or heavily matted dog will take longer. Because I work with one dog at a time, quality and care are never rushed. A time estimate will be provided when you book.

10. Do you use cages, crates, or drying cages?

No. Dog & Bone Grooming is committed to stress‑free grooming. I do not use crates or drying cages. Dogs remain one‑to‑one with me at all times, and drying is done gently using hand or blow drying in a calm environment.

11. Are you qualified?

Yes. I have nearly 20 years’ experience in dog grooming. Early in my career, I recognised the lack of regulation in the industry and committed to gaining formal qualifications.

I hold a Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Salon Management, a BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, and a PGCE teaching qualification. I am also an IPET‑approved training centre.

Over the past  years, I have taught and mentored other groomers, helping them establish their own businesses and achieve their Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Salon Management. Now, I have returned to focusing on what I love most — providing high‑quality, compassionate grooming for dogs.
